DoD: Many Military U.F.O. encounters Are Just Foreign Spying or Airborne Trash

Many recent sightings of UFOs — or unidentified aerial phenomena, as the government prefers to call them — are likely just observations of foreign surveillance operations or airborne clutter, such as weather balloons, according to several US Department of Defense officials who spoke anonymously to The New York Times last week.

According to the unnamed officials, some unidentified aerial phenomena occurrences have been formally recognised as \relatively ordinary\ Chinese surveillance drones. China has already stolen schematics for powerful US fighter jets and is interested in how the US trains its pilots, according to Defense Department sources.

Other unusual aerial phenomenon observations captured by military aircraft, which seem to depict flying objects moving in supposedly physics-defying ways, are most likely optical illusions. This contains the controversial \GOFAST\ film, which was captured by a US Navy aircraft and released to the public in 2018. (The government later declassified the footage, along with two other leaked videos depicting military interactions with UAPs.)

According to Department of Defense officials, the item in the GOFAST video seems to be speeding across the water at unfathomable speeds, but this is only an optical illusion caused by the angle of the recording relative to the water. The item is travelling at little more than 30 mph (48 km/h), according to the authorities.

The results cited by The Times are anticipated to be included in a classified unidentified aerial phenomenon report sent to Congress this week by the Department of Defense's intelligence organizations. The latest study adds fresh information to events documented in a paper issued publicly in June 2021 by officials, outlining 144 purported UAP occurrences reported by US government workers between 2004 and 2021.

The 2021 study noted that most purported unexplained aerial phenomenon encounters could not be explained definitively owing to a lack of high-quality data. The paper, however, provided numerous broad possibilities for UAP in general, including \technologies deployed by China, Russia, another country, or a non-governmental entity,\ as well as \airborne clutter\ such as birds and weather balloons.

No mention of aliens or extraterrestrials was included in the report; nonetheless, this did not prevent alien conspiracy theories from surfacing, owing in part to the government's overall lack of openness about unusual aerial phenomenon situations.

According to Sue Gough, a Department of Defense spokesman, the administration is dedicated to providing whatever unexplained aerial phenomena information it can without jeopardizing national security. Government authorities also avoid addressing UAP instances publicly because there is just not enough evidence to explain them decisively, according to Gough.

\In many situations, observable occurrences are categorised as 'unidentified' simply because sensors did not capture enough information to establish a positive attribution,\ Gough said to The Times. \We are attempting to prevent future deficits and ensure we have enough data for our study.\

While the Department of Defense continues its investigation into unexplained aerial phenomenon occurrences, NASA has established an independent UAP research team that will be operational from October 2022 through mid-2023. According to NASA, the team's primary goal will be to gather and analyse as much UAP data as possible in order to create new ways of recognising unidentified objects in America's sky.
